Meet the Photographer – Sam Johnson

What made you want to try half-frame, and what was your first half-frame camera?

I was introduced to the work of Mick Williamson some time ago and it intrigued me. As a keen film photographer I’m always looking at different perspectives on how to take photographs and be more creative as you are always learning.

I joined Bluesky, found an amazing and inspiring film community and basically took the leap into half frame photography.

The first HF camera I purchased was an Olympus Pen EE quickly followed by the EE2. Both solid little cameras, however, both come with limitations, but these limitations allowed me to experiment, opening my mind to new ideas and pushing me to be more creative. They definitely gave me the half frame bug and once I heard about the Pentax 17 it was a no brainer and that became my go to camera.

Favourite subject and/or HalF-frame photo?

Living in the Lake District is very inspirational and I have an obsession with sheep pens/holdings and how they almost become works of art within the working landscape.

What is it you like most about Half-frame?

Half frame photography has certainly made me think and look differently at how I can capture these wonderful farming methods and traditions.

Your top tip/s for shooting half frame photos?

My top tip for half frame photography would be to just relax and have fun, you will be amazed at what you see and record.
