What made you want to try half-frame, and what was your first half-frame camera?
Initially it wasn’t something I was interested in, always feeling like the larger the negative the better the image. To be honest, it was Pentax and the 17 that got me excited about half frames. I was all in on their new film camera teasers and had a very mixed reaction to hearing (when it was finally revealed) that it was going to be a half-frame. But the idea grew on me, and I ordered one as soon as I could and more or less fell in love right away. So yes, my first, and still only, half frame camera is the Pentax 17.

What is it you like most about Half-frame?
The number of frames. There’s something liberating about getting 72-81 frames per roll of 36 that boosts the creativity. More likely to take a chance on this shot, blindly click. I’m a very deliberate photographer, even with digital, even with a cell phone, I have an old habit (from shooting film in my formative photography years) of only taking the photo when I feel it is ‘just right.’ The Half-frame has helped overcome that. I’m still pretty reluctant to blow through a roll in a day, but the freedom has improved my style and vision in a way that wouldn’t have happened without the half frame. That and I looooove half frame triptychs/multiples

Favourite subject and/or HalF-frame photo?
It is quite varied, but tends to be what’s around me, architecture, water, clouds.

Your top tip/s for shooting half frame photos?
Don’t be reluctant to turn it sideways. Take a cool sequence, shoot more than you normally would. Enjoy the process, and don’t stress about the output size. You can print a half frame negative large enough.
