What made you want to try half-frame, and what was your first half-frame camera?

I wanted to try something new — I primarily work with medium format film and Polaroids, so I wanted to do more 35 mm work and be able to save on film. My first half frame was a Pentax 17 , which is great because it has a great lens and since it’s new it has a warranty. This was important for me because most of my cameras are really old! So it was nice to have a piece of equipment fresh out of the box that is reliable and doesn’t need a ton of repairs.

What is it you like most about Half-frame?

I love that images show up as a diptych. There is an element of surprise (if you’re not planning a shoot) in what images show up next to each other. So, there can often be unsuspecting narrative threads you can pull, just based on the roulette of what images end up paired together.

Favourite subject and/or Half-frame photo?

This architectural photo I took and developed during my darkroom class at NC State. Being able to take such a cool picture and develop it was like magic, and I was also able to enlarge it to 8×10 without losing too much quality.

Your top tip/s for shooting half frame photos?

Have fun with it! Sometimes I feel like I’m overthinking in my photography so half-frame is a good way to loosen up and capture images without being so strict about it, because there are so many (72) opportunities that come with one roll of film.
