What made you want to try half-frame, and what was your first half-frame camera?

I rediscovered analog photography through Lomography when I bought their Lomo Instant Wide. It lit up my GAS syndrome (gear acquisition syndrome). I found Olympus pen (second iteration) but quickly it jammed ( shutter malfunction). A few months later I found a Rollei 35 at a local flea market. With this one I got the knack for the street photography. I eventually lost my rollei 35. The week after I replaced it with an Olympus pen (first iteration) and from that day on, I never stopped using it on a daily basis. It became the true extension of my hand.

What is it you like most about Half-frame?

With half-frame it is 72 possibilities on each film. Its portrait orientation appeals to me. Moreover, most of half-frame cameras are small ,versatile and sturdy. You can forget it in your vest’s pocket or in a casual bag, no need to get any special gear. It makes a very good “partner” for street photography.

Favourite subject and/or Half-frame photo?

Most of my subjects are taken on my way to work or way back to home so it is essentially street subjects but not necessary characters. I gave up taking landscapes for each attempt was not satisfactory.

I sometimes also like to “map” buildings such as bell towers. That’s the power of half-frame: to allow you to shoot more on the same subject. By reading other photographers’ introductions on your website I discovered the penorama idea. I definitely want to try it.

Your top tip/s for shooting half frame photos?

Read all the photographer introductions of this website. You’ll learn lots of things and from there, ideas will come to you.

Half-frame is one of the best solutions to indulge yourself in analog photography. You can take it anywhere anytime, no organization needed.  If a subject pops up in front of you it takes a couple of seconds to get your half-frame camera in your hands. After that your can forget it in your bag/vest and continue with your daily activities.
