Meet the Photographer – Sandra Ronca

What made you want to try half-frame, and what was your first half-frame camera?

My first and, I have to admit, only half-frame camera is the Lomo LC-Wide. It was a gift, meant to complete my array of analog cameras for every occasion. This one is a lightweight, literally and metaphorically. It’s not sophisticated, technically speaking, but I carry it with me all the time, because it’s so small. When I got it, I perused the look book that came with it – immediately, my eyes were drawn to the half-frame pictures. I was hooked.

What is it you like most about Half-frame?

Serendipity, I‘m an instant photographer at heart. Being the proud owner of a few vintage Polaroid cameras and a board member of a club promoting instant photography in Germany, I embrace imperfection and experimentation. In my opinion, the somewhat random combination of two pictures often leads to surprising echos or contrasts with added layers of meaning and beauty.

Favourite subject and/or Half-frame photo?

My favorites are usually visually surprising or puzzle diptychs with a striking continuation of lines or graphic elements. And, of course, juxtapositions.

Your top tip/s for shooting half frame photos?

If aiming for a specific diptych, I shoot three pictures: first one subject, then the second, and the first again. That way, I can be sure the combo shows up on the roll and scan, no matter how it’s cut. Not a profound realization, but I like the rhythm of it. I don’t have to keep track of the count, instead I can be free and creative.
