What made you want to try half-frame, and what was your first half-frame camera?

I’ve always been a very curious photographer. Whether it meant trying different film stocks or even trying different formats. My mind has always gravitated towards trying something new. Which led me to run into the Pentax 17 campaign. I did some research on the Pentax 17 and instantly, I knew that I wanted that camera to be in my possession. Thus, it became my first half frame camera.

What is it you like most about Half-frame?

There’s more room for freedom. Sometimes, I found myself thinking that every single frame had to be something gallery worthy. Shooting half frame, has given me the opportunity to take my camera and document stories of some of my travels with more freedom. I love having the ability to share these stories whether that’s through diptychs or just simple half frames.

Favourite subject and/or Half-frame photo?

I don’t actually have a favorite subject, I kind of just carry my camera with me on my days off and try to document either what I’m doing or what is happening in my surroundings. My favorite photo however, is this photo of this girl standing in front of this giant boulder. When I saw this boulder told myself I had to take a photo of this but somehow figure out a way to show the viewer just how enormous this boulder is. Luckily a family was walking and the curiosity of this child to stand in front of the boulder offered the perfect reference point to show the viewer just how enormous this boulder was.

Your top tip/s for shooting half frame photos?

The single most important tip I can offer for shooting half frame photos is to just have fun with it. I feel that half frame not only doubles your frame count but also leaves room for experimentation. Whether that’s on camera experimentation with double exposures/ lens filters. Half frame offers more room for storytelling. You could dedicate a visual story to just one roll of film.
