Meet the Photographer – Matthew Hope

What made you want to try half-frame, and what was your first half-frame camera?

Like many, not only did I start shooting on digital but I love frivolous snap photography. 72 frames helps relieve that tendency to shoot film with restraint, especially in a world where a roll of film might cost $50 USD+ from roll to development. My first half frame was a Pen-D that I bought refurbished at Tokyo Camera in Akihabara.

What is it you like most about Half-frame?

Besides enjoying double the frames, I find myself shooting in portrait orientation a lot living Tokyo because everything is so close together and vertically oriented. But I’ve only recently started discovering diptych composition, which is really attractive as someone who loves visual storytelling.

Favourite subject and/or Half-frame photo?

Your top tip/s for shooting half frame photos?

If you’re particular about image quality, experiment with different film stocks and speeds to find something that works for you. This applies to all formats but is particularly relevant to half frame due to the limited resolution. I currently shoot 400 ASA but I’m experimenting with 200 ASA for my next roll on a Pen-FT with a Zuiko 42mm / f1.2 for low light flexibility.
