What made you want to try half-frame, and what was your first half-frame camera?

I wanted to try half frame because I really liked the idea of getting twice as many images out of a roll of film. I think half frame is perfect for traveling. Not only are the cameras generally smaller than average, but you also only have to carry around half as much film as you ordinarily would with a full frame camera. My first half frame camera was the Olympus Pen EES-2. I was fortunate to also serve as a beta tester for both the Kodak Ektar H35 and the Kodak Ektar H35N.

What is it you like most about Half-frame?

The thing I like most about half frame is the ability to create diptychs. It’s so fun to pair two images together. It’s a great way to spark your creativity – the possibilities are endless!

Favourite subject and/or Half-frame photo?

As far as subjects are concerned, I really like to combine or juxtapose two images that may or may not intuitively go together – the more ironic the better. My favorite half frame diptych (a sign for a gym next to a Taco Bell sign) is a great example of that.

Your top tip/s for shooting half frame photos?

My top tip for half frame photography is to be mindful of the images you pair together. Of course, each individual image should be interesting or compelling in its own right, but combining them for diptychs can make the viewing experience even more powerful. There are so many different ways to do this. You can combine opposites, you can pair subjects of the same color, or maybe complementary colors. You can pair two different perspectives of the same subject – one from a far away vantage point, and one close up or a detail shot. You’re only limited by your imagination.
